ABOUT POLOPOS
Polopos is a small and ancient village, situated almost directly south of Granada, on the southerly slopes of the Sierra de Contraviesa. There are magnificent views to the Mediterranean below. A little further inland, the Sierra Nevada provides an inspiring backdrop to the historic city of Granada.
This area, from the Sierra Nevada to the sea is
called ‘Las Alpujarras’ and National Geographic magazine once described this
area as ‘one of the inhabited beauty spots of the world’. Praise indeed! This
is certainly true of the Spring when every plant flowers- the best times being
April/May.
There are not more than a hundred or so residents
here now, although throughout the year the number is increased by visiting
families and friends.
This is still a working village and, where many areas
have abandoned the land in favour of tourism, in Polopos farming still holds on.
The main crops are almonds and vines. Polopos is well known for it’s wine and
there are no cooperatives here!
Recently,
The Perez family have set up a small museum
dedicated to the production of wine in Polopos over the years-well worth a
visit, and a tasting! Other crops are fruit and veg, including peachs figs,
avocados, apricots and chirimoyas (custard apples).
There are flocks of sheep and goats, and the use of
mules is a way of life, which, slowly, is giving way to 4X4s! Although this is
a peaceful place, apart from August when the village is ‘en Fiestas’, there is
much to do. Walking and Birdwatching are the most popular with visitors, while
others come to generally explore the area and paint and photograph the
countryside. On the coast there are uncrowded beaches where you can swim,
snorkel and fish and the water is mainly calm and crystal clear.
At the foot of our hill there is a well run campsite
with bar and restaurant, where you can use the pool and eat cheaply and
well.
Along the coast there are many market days in various villages as well as further inland. More sophisticated pursuits can be found at the not too distant tourist resorts of Almunacar and Nerja, plus of course the city of Granada and also Almeria are not far away.
Furthermore the motorways now connect to most of the southern cities, many within a days drive. But whatever your particular interests, if you appreciate the relative peace of the countryside, you’ll like it here!
